Al was voted one of the Top Fifty Acoustic Guitarists of All Time by the readers of Acoustic Guitar Magazine, where he also won Silver and Bronze medals in the magazine's Player's Choice Awards. In addition to performing with his wife Amy White and teaching, Al is Guitar Week coordinator for the world famous "Swannanoa Gathering" music camp at Warren Wilson College near Asheville, N.C.

Al Petteway - Appalachian Fingerstyle Guitar In DADGAD Tuning - Vol 1 - DVD
Blues, Hymns, Celtic And Banjo Styles. The ringing strings and open voicings of DADGAD tuning produce an ethereal, almost magical guitar sound! In Al Petteway’s masterful hands, well-known Southern Mountain songs and instrumentals are given a new treatment, brought to life with fresh new harmonies and inventive fingerpicking. Al shows you how easy it is to play in DADGAD and how this tuning can enhance even the most familiar song. You’ll find it exciting and fun to learn blues fingerpicking favorites inspired by Doc Watson, Etta Baker and Merle Travis; explore the rich harmonies and haunting melodies of ancient Sacred Harp shape-note hymns; play hard-driving banjo tunes; and imitate the Scottish-Irish bagpipe and fiddle sounds that are the Celtic roots of Appalachian music. Al offers a myriad of guitar techniques and numerous tips on musicianship and style that will enhance everything you do on the guitar! Songs include: "John Henry, Sitting on Top of the World, I Am a Pilgrim, Going Down the Road Feelin’ Bad, Wondrous Love, Wayfaring Stranger, Shady Grove, Pretty Polly, Reuben’s Train, and Craggy Pinnacle".

Al Petteway - Appalachian Fingerstyle Guitar In DADGAD Tuning - Vol 2 - DVD
Mountain Songs, Fiddle Tunes, And Blues. Fingerstyle master Al Petteway continues his exploration of the evocative DADGAD tuning with a variety of must-learn tunes in the Southern mountain tradition. In his hands, this tuning becomes an inventive and compelling way to play bluegrass, blues and country songs. A small alteration of chord shapes will give you the "high lonesome" sounds of Appalachian music, and standard chords add color to well-known country songs. Al teaches a dynamic arrangement of Clarence Ashley’s iconic clawhammer banjo tune, "The Cuckoo", replete with hammer-ons, pull-offs, octave licks and other tricks of the trade. Using DADGAD for fiddle tunes can build your arranging skills as well as your picking techniques. "Bonapart's Retreat, Red Haired Boy, Frosty Morning" and the pure bluegrass of "Black Mountain Rag" all fall neatly into DADGAD as Al plays the melody with alternating bass accompaniment and the added power of some iconic bluegrass licks! Al closes the lesson with Etta Baker’s "One Dime Blues", played using a bass/chord thumb rhythm against syncopated high notes to help make one guitar "sound like two guitars".

Al Petteway - Blues Guitar Arrangements In DADGAD Tuning - DVD
Create fingerstyle blues instrumentals, from Delta swamp to Piedmont bounce and transform your guitar arrangements with new ideas and thrilling sounds! Al Petteway, one of our most musically inventive guitarists, teaches you six original tunes - each highlighting a different rhythmic and melodic feel and utilizing the unique qualities that DADGAD tuning offers. "It's Only the Blues" employs a steady “dead thumb” bass with lots of slinky licks - a very swampy sound based on a Jimi Hendrix idea. "Octave Jam" imitates a 12-string as played by Leadbelly, using parallel octaves, plucking and snapping the strings for a grooving bass pattern. "Darling Cory" brings bluegrass harmonies to the blues as you play the haunting melody in parallel 5ths while keeping the bass moving. "Sweet Potato Fries" combines the sounds of Robert Johnson and Big Bill Broonzy, while "Walking Stick" and "It's Good To Be Back Home" simulate the alternate-bass Piedmont blues styles of Doc Watson and Etta Baker. This lesson will open up exciting new possibilities and musical explorations for guitarists at all levels!

Al Petteway - Celtic Instrumentals For Fingerstyle Guitar - Vol 1 - DVD
This wonderful lesson by one of today's most admired fingerstyle players is filled with invaluable insights into playing in Celtic style, from strongly syncopated rhythm strokes to the ringing, harp-like sounds of "cross-string" picking. You'll learn to locate the notes and chords in DADGAD, and how to use the capo to utilize open strings in different keys. Al explains how to play the modal scales that feature strongly in this kind of music, which allow you to improvise within the genre, and he provides important exercises for gaining maximum fluidity in all of your guitar playing. Best of all, you'll learn to take traditional tunes and make them unique to your own style and abilities. Al teaches five beautiful pieces from his vast repertoire including: "Sligo Creek, Rise Up My Love, New Year's Day, On Christmas Night (medley), and Chesapeake"

Al Petteway - Celtic Instrumentals For Fingerstyle Guitar - Vol 2 - DVD
In this DVD lesson Al Petteway covers songs and effects that can be attained through a variety of tunings, including standard, dropped-D, open G, and low C. Al shows you how to create your own arrangements by finding the melody within the chord structure, then fleshing it out with pipe-like drone notes, chord substitutions, moving bass lines, the rhythmic "Scottish Snap" and other Celtic-sounding elements. Embellishment techniques--right hand rolls, hammers, pull-offs, etc.--help you turn basic tunes into elegant guitar pieces. You'll learn wonderful exercises for developing your right and left hand speed and dexterity, along with complete arrangements for five beautiful instrumentals: "Fly to The Hills in The Morning (Johnny Cope), Light and Airy (a slip jig), the classic Sidh Beag Sidh Mor, Red Haired Boy, and the beautiful Jock O'Hazeldean". Finally, Al pulls all the elements together with his "Caledon Wood", a piece that incorporates everything he has taught on both volumes: right hand rhythm patterns, damping effects, harmonics, lyrical and percussive playing, and much, much  more!
